So as you may have known, been doing a lot of traveling around lately.
Most recently – Asheville, North Carolina!
Quick note: Weird factor here is pretty high as the townies call themselves the original weird.
Portland stole the “Portland is weird” thing from Austin who say they were the inventors of “Keep Austin weird” which, according to the folks in Asheville – you’d clearly know Asheville North Carolina is the original weird place to be.
Either way, we stopped in this place called Jack of the Wood Public House. Oddly, it’s touted as an authentic irish bar/pub in the downtown area.
This evening the mood was set by the celtic rock stars playing the same song for 3 hours.
After perusing the menu, I found something I’ve never had before…so I ordered it.
Scotch Egg: A new house favorite. Local hard-boiled egg wrapped in spicy house-made sausage, coated with bread crumbs and fried. Served with sautéed greens and a drizzle of Asheville’s own Lusty Monk mustard – $7
Well, indeed it was fried…and layered thick. Like the fat chick at the fried chicken buffet line – this was heavy and wasn’t going anywhere.
The sausage wrap was heavy and pretty crispy. The whole grain Lusty Monk mustard was more spicy than the actual sausage wrapping.
And I am not sure if that’s called a “drizzle” either. sautéed greens were a nice touch to the dish…sadly, that kind of stuff never photographs well. Apologies.
Never having this before, the hard-boiled egg could have been a 4 minute egg and then finished with the fry-o-later. But maybe people in Ireland like their eggs well overcooked.
Been there, done that, got the t-shirt and blogged about it, done.
Pickle chips: A basket of batter-dipped, deep-fried pickle slices served with a side of chipotle ranch dressing – $5
Now these are worth coming back. Light batter was a joy to see since most places usually plaster a 4 inch thick layer. The line lightly batters these pickles. Crisp and delicious. I could eat 100s of these guys any day.
The chipotle ranch was a bit weird, but hey – it’s Asheville.
Reuben
Their reuben called out to me, but their dry bread needed a major dose of butter. Fries seem commercial.
Shepard’s Pie
The waitress recommended their Shepard’s pie.
This just reminded me of Wednesday’s at the cafeteria back in grade school. I wish they put more of the sautéed greens as they were delicious.
Overall, not a bad place for fried pickles and beers.
Absolutely sweet and nice folks here in Asheville…makes me wish I was there again.
Reporting live from QuarryLaneFarms….
We’ve been to XYZ the Tavern a bunch of times…and everyone there raves about their food.
Our response…well…er…um….
So we decided to munchamuncha at XYZ the Tavern (@XYZtheTavern) located in the Gordon Square/Detroit Shoreway neioghborhood in Cleveland.
Located at 6419 Detroit Ave in Cleveland….this is the sister ship tavern of the Cleveland famous ABC Tavern at 1872 W 25th St in Cleveland.
A few interesting tidbits about the menu – the guy planning out this menu must be having a threesome with a Japanese chick and an Italian chick…cause they are serving Country Fried Chicken & Waffles and Soba noodles and Gnocchi du jour!?!!?! WTH? Put those three together and it sounds like the start of a great prono!
Well, let me rephrase that for all those Food Network drones…
Alan’s got one tavern in Cleveland…and decides he wants another one.
But he doesn’t want to drive too far.
So he grabs his two buddies – Chef Kelly and Chef Reichart…Drinks alot of Mountain Dew…
And comes up with a menu with good scratch cooking…with some “higher priced chunks of beef”…
This…is XYZ Tavern.
Heh heh heh.
Country Fried Chicken & Waffles: with savory gravy and/or real Ohio maple syrup – $10
Basically this is gigantic chicken tenders lanced with quartered waffles.
Sweet, salty, savory….the only thing we wanted was spicy. Bring on the Siracha!
For your decision whether to get gravy or waffles? Get both.
XYZ the Tavern Reuben –
Oh yes we opted this guy with extra order of gravy.
Fries came out extra oily and lukewarm.
Additionally, the fries were droopy. Not cool.
Corned beef was well marbled but could have used more time in. Comparatively, we like Corky & Lenny’s, Jacks, Slyman’s, and Lucky’s better.
But in the heat of the moment, this sandwich would do since the near west side seems to have a lack of corned beef places in my drunken stupor.
Should we?
Oh yeah, we decided to go big and dip our reuben IN the gravy.
Delicious…..just delicious.
Now the best part of our visit? Hands down – the staff. (how often do we get to say that?!?!?!)
Three sips of water, and different wait staff was Johnny on the spot to fill our glasses.
Needing another napkin, the waitress from another table rushed one to us w/in 30 seconds.
Half way done with my Stella, a different waiter slid in and asked if I wanted another.
And then another staff member brought us our beers! Halleuja!
This cohesive team of wait staff are incredible!
Yes, the staff members/bar tenders at XYZ the Tavern will have us coming back again and again and again…
